Safeguarding at St. Joseph’s Parish Levin
At St. Joseph's Parish Levin, we believe that every person is created in the image and likeness of God and deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.
Safeguarding is about creating and nurturing a parish community where every person feels welcome, valued, respected, and safe. It is a shared responsibility that belongs to all of us - not only our clergy and parish leaders, but every volunteer, ministry member, and parishioner.
The Catholic Church has zero tolerance for any form of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or harm. We are committed to fostering a culture where concerns are taken seriously, people are listened to, and appropriate action is taken whenever needed.
Our Commitment
St. Joseph’s Parish Levin is committed to:
promoting the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved in parish life.
Providing ministries and activities that are welcoming, respectful and safe.
Supporting a culture where concerns can be raised openly and responded to appropriately.
Following the safeguarding policies and standards of the Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington and the National Office for Professional Standards.
Responding to concerns with compassion, integrity, and respect for all involved.
National Safeguarding Standards
The Catholic Church throughout New Zealand has adopted the National Safeguarding Guidelines, developed by the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference (NZCBC) and the Congregational Leaders Conference Aotearoa New Zealand (CLCANZ).
These guidelines establish consistent safeguarding practices across every Catholic diocese, religious congregation, and Catholic organisation in New Zealand. They provide the framework for creating safe environments, responding compassionately to those who have experienced harm, and ensuring safeguarding remains an ongoing priority.
Supporting these guidelines are:
A national Safeguarding Policy
A Code of Conduct for clergy, employees, and volunteers
Standards for Creating and Maintaining a Safeguarding Culture, against which Catholic organisations are independently audited through the National Office for Professional Standards.

Safeguarding in Our Parish
Safeguarding is woven into the everyday life of our parish.
Whether someone is attending a sacramental programme, visiting a parish group, receiving pastoral care, or volunteering in ministry, they should experience a community where they are treated with dignity, respect, and genuine care.
Everyone serving in ministries involving children, young people, or vulnerable adults is expected to meet safeguarding requirements appropriate to their role.
Depending on the ministry, this includes:
Police Vetting or Ministry of Justice Check
Safeguarding education and ongoing training
Reading and signing our St. Joseph’s Parish Code of Conduct
Following safe ministry practices and maintaining healthy professional boundaries
Understanding how to recognise and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns
These measure help build trust and ensure our parish remains a safe place for all.
Speaking Up
An important part of safeguarding is ensuring people know how to raise concerns.
If you are worried about the safety or wellbeing of a child, young person, vulnerable adults, or any member of our parish community, we encourage you to speak with our Parish Safeguarding Contact Person, Parish Priest, or any member of our Parish Operations Team.
All concerns are treated seriously, respectfully, and in accordance with Church safeguarding procedures.
If someone is in immediate danger, contact New Zealand Police by calling 111.
